Shellbrook is a nice sized town about 40 km. west of Prince Albert on Highway 3. It seems to be a town unlikely to die in the near future.

This Pioneer elevator was built in 1983. It is a newer style steel clad concrete elevator. Built to replace an older elevator, an annex built in 1953 still stands beside it.

That would make this sign 63 years old this year. It's getting pretty faded but it still reads "PIONEER GRAIN CO LIMITED".

Shellbrook is blessed with three elevators. Any more than one in a small town is becoming a real rarity, and any at all is rare any more.

If you've ever wondered how Pioneer elevators came to be coloured that bright orange and yellow that they wear, here's how:
"A distinctive feature of Pioneer’s modern elevator facilities is their orange and yellow colour scheme. This colour choice was the contribution of Mrs. Pat Cruikshank, a former architect and the wife of the company’s engineer, Claude C. Cruikshank. When the new colour scheme was first tried on a single elevator in 1962, it was an immediate success and was quickly adopted throughout the line."
