The Congregational Church of Patchogue is a congregation that has ministered to people in this community for over 200 years. The church began in 1793 in a small building, approximately 25 by 20 feet, that we shared with our good neighbors, the Methodists. Even after constructing a new building in 1820, we continued to share space with them until 1832.
As the Village of Patchogue grew, so did our congregation and a third building was erected in 1854 at the northwest corner of Lake Street and Ocean Avenue. There is a lovely picture in our Reception Room today of this building—complete with portraits of actual members of the church at that time. This was an important location, not just for church members, but for many others in the area who were invited to use the church for community events. In 1893, the fourth and present brownstone building was constructed. And in 1961, an educational wing was added giving the church an additional 14 classrooms and a gym.
