Harrison County

Formed, 1784, from Monongalia. It included all or parts of 17 other counties. Named for Benjamin Harrison, signer of Declaration of Independence and the governor of Virginia, 1781-84. Birthplace of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.


Taylor County

Formed, 1844, from Marion, Harrison and Barbour. Named fro John Taylor, of Virginia. This county was the home of Bailey Brown, first Union soldier killed in the Civil War. He was shot, May 22, 1861 at Fetterman, now Grafton.
