Strækningen blev anlagt i 1876 som privatbane og overtaget af staten i 1881, men Strømmen Stations nuværende bygning er fra 1905 og tegnet af DSBs overarkitekt Heinrich Wenck i nationalromantisk stil. Strækningen blev nedlagt den 2. maj 1971, men blev anvendt som godsbane frem til 1993. Sporet findes stadig mellem Randers og Allingåbro.
In 1876 this line started out as a private company until 1881 where it was tranfered to the state railroads. Strømmen Station wa in use until 2. maj 1971. After that the line was used only for cargo. Even though the tracks are still there the last train used this line in 1993.
