Gutzon Borglum was born in Saint Charles on March 25, 1867, and went on to become a well known sculptor. He is most famous as the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, but has a wide body of work. The memorial on the church property was removed and the city took possession of the center stone which it had mounted for display on city property. There is a new memorial adjacent to the city hall.
