The Ongerup General Store at Lot 48 Eldridge Street, which was an IGA supermarket, is advertised as being 'For Sale or Lease on 3 Titles'. When the store was trading it also operated the Ongerup Licensed Post Office. Presumably should the store ever re-open the Post Office may relocate back to there. The original Post Office Boxes are still installed in the front wall of the store, a separate set having been installed into the side wall of the Town Hall. The Ongerup Licensed Post Office currently operates within the Town Hall.
Ongerup is a small town located 410 km south-east of Perth and 54 km east of Gnowangerup in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.
The town exists to service the local agricultural community. Surrounding farms mainly produce wheat, barley, canola and wool, while lesser quantities of lupins, oats, alfalfa and other crops are also grown. Beef cattle, fat lambs, and pigs are sideline industries.
Grain silos belonging to Cooperative Bulk Handling are located at Ongerup and during harvest time these silos store grain from surrounding farms before it is transported to Albany by road for export.
