The Saalfeld town hall was completed in its present form in 1537. It was the model for the castle hardenberg in Torgau. In preparing the 1100 year celebration of Saalfeld in 1999 there was a general refurbishment of the Town Hall.Today it serves as the official residence of the mayor, as a government building and archive. It is a building in the Saxon-Thuringian early Renaissance, with local components,as well as allusions to contemporary French castele design. The slaned window in polygonal stair tower is typical of the Renaissance architecture. At the stair tower is a small balcony, above a plaque engraved with the fish of the city arms of Saalfeld. The town Saalfeld is situated in the valley of the Saale River. The area was first mentioned in 899 and is one of the oldest foundations in eastern Thuringia.
Das Saalfelder Rathaus wurde in seiner heutigen Form 1537 fertig gestellt. Es war Vorbild für das Schloss Hardenberg in Torgau. Im Rahmen der Vorbereitung der 1100-Jahrfeier der Stadt Saalfeld 1999 fand eine Generalsanierung des Rathauses statt. Heute dient es als Amtssitz des Bürgermeisters, als Behördenhaus und Archiv! Das Rathaus ist ein Bauwerk im sächsisch-thüringischer Frührenaissance, sowohl mit einheimischen Bauelementen, als auch Anlehnungen an die moderne französische Schlossbauweise. Die schrägen Fenster im polygonalem Treppenturm sind ganz typisch für die Renaissance-Bauweise. Am Treppenturm befindet sich ein kleiner Verkündigungsbalkon, darüber eine Wappen-Relief-Tafel mit den Saalefischen des Stadtwappens von Saalfeld. Saalfeld liegt im Tal der Saale, das der Stadt einst seinen Namen gab. Die Altstadt liegt auf einem Hügel unweit des Flusses. Saalfeld wurde 899 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt und gehört damit zu den ältesten Gründungen Ostthüringens.
