The stamp commemorates the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows bridge in 1964. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Now, it barely makes the top ten (although it's still the longest in the United States).
The bridge was named for Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano who is said to have been the first European Explorer to sail into New York Harbor (in 1524).
