Doddridge County
Formed in 1845 from Ritchie, Harrison, Tyler, and Lewis. Named for Philip Doddridge, lawyer~statesman of western Virginia. Many of the Indians who once came to this State got war and hunting weapons from flint quarries near by.
Tyler County
Formed in 1814 from Ohio. Named for John Tyler, governor of Virginia and father of President Tyler. Here in 1894 was drilled "Big Moses", the greatest gas well in the world, producing one hundred million cubic feet pet day.
