After the Great Depression hit in 1929, jobs were scarce in Marshfield as well as elsewhere. In 1935, a building was constructed as a WPA project on the site of the Upham Furniture Company and the Weinbrenner Shoe Company moved there from Milwaukee. The city owned the building and leased it to the Weinbrenner Company for $1 per year, as it continues to do today.

On August 27, 2008 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as #08000841. The Project Architect was Gus A. Krasin and built by the Marshfield Construction Co. and by other local firms. More than 200 people were employed in the new factory and several hundred people continue to be employed making the specialized work shoes for which the Weinbrenner Shoe Company is famous.
