THE PERSON:

Henry Lee III ((January 29, 1756 – March 25, 1818)earned the name "Light Horse Harry" because of his skill on a horse and his command of light troops during the U.S. Revolutionary War. He was awarded the Gold Medal by the Continental Congress. He was later the 9th governor of the state of Virginia from March 4, 1799 – March 3, 1801. Subsequently he accompanied George Washington to put down the so-called Whiskey Rebellion in Pennsylvania, commanding 13,000 militiamen. He achieved the rank of major general, and later served in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Lee married his second-cousin who bore three children before she died. He later married again and six children were born of this marriage. The next to the youngest of these was Robert Edward Lee, January 19, 1807, who later became the famed general of the Confederacy.
