This sign was first erected in 1923 as an ad for a new housing development. The sign is located in the hills of Griffith Park and can can be seen from Griffith Observatory and many areas below.

Originally designed to last for 18 months, the sign deteriorated over time. The sign is now an internationally recognized symbol of American cinema. A 1949 renovation gave it new life, but a second restoration in 1978 provided a whole new sign designed to last many years.
