Salt is something we take for granted today, but it was even more important to daily life in the 18th century. Salt was used to preserve food and an army on the march needs preserved food. Salt works, like the one mentioned on the marker made salt from sea water by boiling it or by open-air evaporation.

The nearby salt works produced salt for the Revolution that previously had to be imported.
