After President Kim Young-Sam's father donated this land, the century-old buildings were restored and a modern museum was added containing many exhibits and archives of material related to Kim's life and presidency. The site is open for visitors.
Kim Young-sam dedicated his life to the promotion of democracy in Korea at a time when it was ruled by ex-general Park Chung-hee who had abolished the constitution, disbanded the congress and declared martial law in order to draft a new constitution that would enable him to stay in power for the rest of his life. (Interestingly, Park's daughter was elected president of Korea in 2012.)
When President Park was assassinated by his own CIA director, another military coup left Chun Doo-hwan in power. At one point Kim undertook a 30-day hunger strike in protest. In the next election, both Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung ran against Roh Tae-woo. This split the opposition ticket allowing Roh to be elected. Kim won the next election and served the one five-year term prescribed by the constitution from 1993-1998. He was succeeded by Kim Dae-Jung who continued may of the reforms and was eventually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts at promoting peace with the North.
Kim Young-Sam's presidency was characterized by a vigorous anti-corruption campaign, amnesty for political prisoners, economic development and a policy of globalization.
김영삼 대통령 생가
이곳 거제시 장목면 외포리 1383-3번지는김영삼 대통령 (재임 1993 ~1998) 이 태어난곳이다.
김영삼 대통령은 1927년12월 20일 이 집에서 태어나와포장목초등학교를 다녔고, 서울대학
교 4학년이던 1951년 이화여자대학교3학년이던 동갑 손명순 여사와 결흔하여 이 집에서 신접
살림을 차라가도 했다. 1954년 거제에서전국최연소인 26세의 나이로의원에 당선된 이래
40여년 동안 민주화 투쟁을 이끌면서 국화의원 9선을 거쳤고, 1993년 32년만에 이 나라에 문민
정부를 출범시겼다. 1998년 대통령에서 퇴임하기까지 평생을 이 나라의민주주의를 위해 헌신
하였다,
1893년목조기와 건물 5동으로 세워진 생가는 100년이상의 세월이 흐르면서 건물 전체가 심
하게 노후되어 전면적인 정비가 시급했다. 그러던 중 2000년 8월김영삼 대통령의 부친홍조
옹이 대지와건물 일체를거제시에 기증했고, 거제시가 문화유산으로길이보존하기 위해 2001년
5월 9일 현재의 모습으로 중건하였다.
현재총 대자면적536 m2에 목조기와 건물 3동 (본채 75.24m2, 사랑채 27m2, 사주문 5.81m2) 과
석축 및 석장 130m가 축조되어 있다. 본채의 사량문은김영삼 대통령의 친필이다.
생가에서 바라보이는 왼쪽산 능선에 부친김홍조옹과모친 박부연여사의 묘소가 있다,

Birthplace of President Kim Young-Sam
This house, situated at 1383-3, Oepo-ri jangmok-myeon in the city of Geoje, is
the place where President Kim Young-Sam (Presidential term 1993~1998) was
born.
President Kim was born on 20 December 1927 and went to Oepo Jangmok
Elementary School. In 1951, as a senior at Seoul National University, he married
Son Myeong-Sun, a junior of Ewha Women’s University, and the newly married
couple spent some time in the house.
Elected in Geoje as the youngest congressman in the history of Korea at age
of 26, President Kim lead the fight for the democratization of the country for
Forty years, was elected congressman nine times and finally in 1993, launched
the first civilian government. Until 1998 when he finished his term as president,
President Kim devoted all of his life to the Korean democracy.
The wooden house built in 1893 and four other buildings had become very old
after more than one hundred years and general renovation was necessary.
In August 2000, Mr. Kim Hong-jo, father of President Kim Young-Sam, donated
the house and its land to the city rebuilt the house as present, finishing
construction on May 9 2001.
In a total area of 536m2 there are three tile-roofed wooden buildings
(the main building—75.24m2, the male quarters-27m2 and Saju Door-5.81m2).
The stone embankment and the 130m wall have been constructed. The inscription
On the main beam in the main building was written by former President Kim.
As seen from the house, located on the left mountain ridgeline, is the tomb of
President Kim’s Father, Mr. Kim Hong-j and mother, Mrs. Park Bu-Yeon.
