As Saalfeld was the capital of the duchy Saxony-Saalfeld, the Saxon coat of arms is displayed in the top-right and bottom-left quarter of the coat of arms. The other two quarters show the coat of arms of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The double-headed imperial eagle is the symbol for the title as imperial prince, the comb in bottom symbolizes the title of Imperial stable Master held by the princes. You can see this coat of arms on a coat tree in front of the Saalfeld brewery.
Das Wappen zeigt in Feld 1+4 in Gold einen schwarzen, rot bewehrten Doppeladler, über den Adlerköpfen schwebend eine Kaiserkrone mit roten Kappen, in den Fängen ein goldenes Zepter und einen goldenen Reichsapfel haltend. Feld 2+3 neunmal von Schwarz und Gold geteilt, belegt mit einem schrägrechten grünem Rautenkranz.
Das Wappen befindet sich an einem Wappenbaum vor dem Saalfelder Brauhaus!
