Born in 1880 in Estonia, Alexander Zuckerberg moved to Canada about 1923 and to Castlegar in 1930. He initially leased the island and built his home there, then bought what became known as Zuckerberg Island on August 6th, 1951.

The house is a very interesting building, with strong Russian architectural influence. The house and outbuildings have been restored by the Castlegar Rotary Club as a heritage building and the entire island is now a park administered by The Castlegar and District Heritage Society.

Given his wish never to leave his little island of paradise, Alexander and his wife, Alicia, were buried in a tiny cemetery on the island, not far from their house.
