"The Saalbau in the south of Essen is a concert hall, and now home to the Philharmonie Essen, with adjoining dining and meeting areas. The building is located in central city on the edge of the city park and near the Aalto Theatre. Music director of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra, Stefan Soltesz, from the season 2013/2014 Tomáš Netopil. Present (2012) director of the Philharmonie is Johannes Bultmann.
First concert and event hall on the same site was completed in 1864. The initiative for the establishment of such a structure, the land purchase and the financing was based on private civic engagement. At this time they did not speak of Saalbau, but the Stadtgartensaal.
From 2003 to 2004, the Saalbau became the seat of the Philharmonie Essen and they completely renovated the building with new technical equipment. Finally the re-opening of the new concert hall took place on 4 June 2004."
