The Watts Bar Nuclear Power Plant produces enough wattage to power 750,000 homes within the Tennessee Valley Authority service area. Construction began in 1973 and the first unit came online in 1996. A second unit is currently under construction and will be the first new nuclear plant constructed in a decade. TVA estimates Watts Bar Unit 2 could help TVA avoid coal-fired emissions of 6 million to 8 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.
WBNPP is responsible for irradiating tritium rods for use by other facilities, namely the Savannah River facility in South Carolina, which has to do with things that go boom on purpose.
