Hidden behind a building on the old cemetery Groenesteeg you can find this huge red beech. It is a rarity in its kind, mainly due to the low branching at a height of two meters above the place where the red crown of the rootstock is grafted.
The construction of the cemetery started in 1827 on a bastion of the Leiden city wall. In this construction period also the beech is planted.
