Lovejoy is employed by a Japanese businessman, Mr Kashimoto, to buy an antique present that he can give to an exclusive golf club that he wants to join. At the same time Lovejoy is asked to value a trophy at the golf club, which purports to have been made by a protégé of Faberge. Lovejoy knows it is a fake and tells the golf club directors so. The trophy is rarely given to winners, only if they have security and only for one week. One of the recipients must have had a copy made.

Meanwhile Eric has been cleaning an antique firearm and it has gone off, blowing a hole through the water tank. When Eric and the plumber go up in the loft they find another replica trophy. Lovejoy’s landlord is a member of the golf club, and the last member to win the trophy. Co-incidentally the plumber identifies the trophy. Apparently the plumber’s grandfather donated the trophy, when the plumber’s family were well off.

Lovejoy goes to see the silver smith who has been making the copies and realises there are five copies in existence. Four of the names are trophy recipients, but the fifth, P Thornly, isn’t even a member of the club. Lady Jane manages to find out that P Thornly is actually Philipa Thornly, and that she used to work behind the bar at the golf club. Further, Philipa and the club captain had had a fling at one time.

The club captain gets annoyed with Lovejoy’s investigations and hires some thugs to warn Lovejoy off. The thugs attack Lovejoy outside a restaurant. Fortunately Mr Kashimoto is there and frightens them off with some fake karate moves.

Tinker manages to find an antique golf club for Mr Kashimoto, who goes to present the club to the golf club, despite the club having blackballed his membership. Mr Kashimoto has, however, out manouevered the golf club. The golf club were thinking of selling the trophy so that they could buy some land to provide access to the golf club. Mr Kashimoto has managed to acquire the land and gets his membership.

Lovejoy managed to find Philipa Thornly, working as a waitress at the restaurant where he was attacked. He takes Philipa to the golf club. The club committee revoke the captain’s membership when they hear that he had sold the trophy and got Philipa to order a copy.
