The hill where today the cathedral of Basel is located was a Celtic oppidum in the first century B.C. In 15 B.C. the place became a Roman settlement and later a castrum, a military base.
A Roman water well, dated to the 3rd century A.D., is located in the center of Münsterplatz in front of the cathedral. It is a dug well with a depth of 19 meters that leads down to the groundwater of the Rhine.
This well was known, but hidden under the sett paving of the square. During street maintenance work it was restored and covered with an iron plate with an inscription recently.
