If you just like to see a lot of railroad cars moving by themselves, then this classification yard will be just the place for you. There is a wide parking area on the south side of Avenue H, just east of the large yard control tower. You will be able to watch cars as they are moved up the hump, uncoupled, and allowed to roll on their own down the hump and through the screeching retarders which slow the cars to just the right speed to allow them to roll gently to a stop as they reach the train into which they are being assembled. It is amazing to watch as many as ten or twelve cars moving down separate tracks, barely gliding along and you don't see how they will ever reach their final stopping point.
