The cemetery is the final resting place of two people, Donald Sutherland and his wife, Elizabeth.  Donald was the first settler on Milford Sound, he had first visited the area as a sealer and declared if he was to settle anywhere it would be here.  He sailed with a dog in a small open from Dunedin in 1877 landing on Milford Sound in December 1877.  He lived there remainder of his life.  He lived alone until 1890 when he married Elizabeth in Dunedin and she returned to Milford Sound with him.   Prior to this he was a squatter on the land he lived, she was of financial means and purchased their land.  They also built facilities to accommodate the tourists who came in the summer.  He died in 1919 and she lived alone until her death in December 1923.   Further information is available about Donald Sutherland at this website.
