This cross is Grade II listed. It was set up here in 1756 when the Square was being redeveloped and the old City Exchange building, once in Northgate Street, was seriously in need of repair. The shaft is reputed to have been a column of the City Exchange.
The area round here was the 'supply and service centre' for the abbey of St.Werburgh, now Chester Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. There was a bakehouse, a brewery, a kiln, kitchens, and a storehouse.
The cross is made of red sandstone. The octagonal shaft is set on an octagonal weathered base with a two-stepped cap, is tapered with a moulded square cornice, a simple cross has been placed at its apex.
