A wonderful shelter just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Peaks of Otter and Petite's Gap which serves as a safe haven on the AT. Great for through hikers or weekend getaways.

Just southeast of the Blue Ridge Parkway and not far from where the AT crosses the seasonally busy road is Thunder Ridge Shelter. A reliable spring is nearby and a modest privy is downhill. There is usually plenty of firewood and space for tent camping.

This was perennially a favorite camping spot for my Boy Scout troop in the 80s and 90s (Troop 10 of Lynchburg, VA). It is a very short hike up to the Thunder Ridge Overlook where I've seen ice and snow in October.
Type: Shelter
