The monument located at the Paseo (Avenue) de la Castellana, near National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid is originally named as "La apoteósis de Isabel la Católica marchando a la realización de nuestra unidad nacional (The Apotheosis of Isabella marching to the realization of our national unity)". It was dedicated in 1883 in the middle of the Paseo de la Castellana, which was in these times an important recreational area of Madrid. In 1958 it was moved a few feet away due to the increasing traffic around to the recent place.
The bronze statuary was made by Barcelona's sculptor Manuel Oms Canet (1843–1886). It consists of the equestrian statue of Queen Isabella I of Castile on horseback holding a cross in her right hand. The riding Queen is guided by Gonzalo de Córdoba (The Great Captain) and by Cardinal Mendoza.
