Located on the corner of SR 50 and Fort Christmas Road, the permanent Christmas display included a tall living tree trimmed in lights, balls, and garland that is lit every night. Santa waves to passersby, and a sleigh pulled by white wire reindeer is near the tree. A large nativity set is located within 15' of the tree and there are many other unusual statues, altars, and mosaics in the area that the casual bypasser misses when traveling by at 55 mph.
Christmas is a small, rural community in East Orange County, east of Orlando and west of Titusville.
Christmas was originally named Fort Christmas, which was built on Christmas day during the Seminole War of 1837 under the orders of General Jesup. The fort was a supply depot in a chain of forts constructed along the St Johns River during a winter campaign against the Seminole Indians.
The "Fort" was dropped when the post office opened in 1892.
