The town of Akaroa has an interestion historty, starting in 1839 with the HMS Britomart and Owen Stanley declaring British Soverenty a week before the French settlers arrived. Many French settlers stayed under British Soverenity. Akaroa with 63 historical places registered speaks to that history. One small example is the Coronation Library at 103 Rue Jolie. It is registered as a New Zealand Historic Place, Category 2, Registration 1716. See (

The Literary and Scientific Institute began in the 1863. By 1875 they had enough support to build a library. The land was donated by Dr. David Watkins and plans by the archetict Samuel Farr. The building was renovated with funds available for the coronation in 1911. The building name was changed to the Coronation Library to mark the coronation of King George V.
Until 1989 this was the town library. In 1989 a new combined library and school was build just up the street at the corner of Selwyn. The Coronation Library remained housing historical archives. Now it is closed due to the Christchurch earthquakes. The notice on the door states "The Christchurch City CouncilFacility is closed due to the earthquakes". This building is low on the priority list for assesment. To a casualy observer the building seems intact and safe but a proper assesment may take some time.
