Mile One Centre is home to the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League. It opened in 2001 and is so named because it is located at the eastern terminus of the Trans-Canada Highway (Mile 0), but in an interesting twist, "Mile One" is a trademark owned by the Williams Family Foundation, not the City of St. John's, meaning that the centre can only use the "Mile One" name so long as it has the foundation's permission to do so.

The American Hockey League is a professional league that is one level below the continent's top professional league, the National Hockey League. The IceCaps were the top affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets and then Montreal Canadiens. The Growlers are an affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs.
