People passing by the King Broadcasting Station might notice a sculpture of a family sitting on an overstuffed chair staring out onto Dexter Ave. but most likely watching TV (or are they people watching?). Since this family is located in front of a TV news station, I'll put my money on them watching the King5 News!

This sculpture is listed in the Smithsonian Art Inventory and the datasheet on this sculpture says the following:

Figure grouping of a family. They sit on an overstuffed chair; the father on the proper right, the mother in the center, a daughter on the proper left and a son in front, between the mother and father. To the far proper left, a dog sits on the ground next to the chair. A cat sits on the back of the chair on the proper right, its back is turned towards the family. The family members all gaze forward as if watching a television. The cast aluminum sculpture sits on a flat concrete pad set flush on a brick plaza.

This sculpture was created by artist Richard S. Beyer in 1988. (Mr. Beyer passed away April 12, 2012 at 86 years of age). He made over 90 sculptures in his lifetime, his most well-known sculpture being People Waiting For the Interurban which is located in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.

In my personal observation of this sculpture, I was impressed by the simplicity of design in the sculpted figures and yet they portray much depth and emotion in each family member's expression. I originally assumed this sculpture was made of concrete and it feels like it when touched. When I look at this sculpture, I almost feel as if it was shaped by a chainsaw that is carving out a wooden piece. The jagged and 'chiseled' look and feel seems similar to something I'd see in a wooden carving.
