Just southeast of the Blue Ridge Parkway and not far from where the AT crosses the seasonally busy road is Thunder Ridge Shelter. A reliable spring is nearby and a modest privy is downhill. There is usually plenty of firewood and space for tent camping.
This was perennially a favorite camping spot for my Boy Scout troop in the 80s and 90s (Troop 10 of Lynchburg, VA). It is a very short hike up to the Thunder Ridge Overlook where I've seen ice and snow in October.
Number of tent spaces: Four or more
Access to Campsite: Parking nearby, accessible by foot
Special Features: Amazing views, solid shelter and a mecca for AT hikers and weekend campers.
