During and prior to 2005, 275 artists from Alberta and Saskatchewan created 336 paintings. These paintings were then arranged in a mosaic in such a manner as to create a larger picture, which is "The Buffalo Twins". I won't try to describe the mural here; you need to look at it for yourself. The project, Sponsored by CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce), is a joint Alberta-Saskatchewan centennial project, celebrating their 100th anniversaries as provinces. As I already wrote, it absolutely blew us away when we first saw it.

Phil Alain of Night of Artists: "‘Buffalo Twins’ refers to an early suggested name for the new province that would have been Alberta and Saskatchewan together.

...Back in 1905 the two provinces were almost actually made into one province named 'Buffalo'. However the size of the two provinces combined was too intimidating for the well being of Canada as a whole so it was decided that the provinces would be split down the middle and one would be named Alberta and the other Saskatchewan. The mural is re-uniting the twins that were separated at birth through a piece of artwork. Its a story we had no idea was even out there until we started this project. It was a pretty amazing find for us!”

The brainchild of three Albertans: Lewis Lavoie, producer Phil Alain and production manager/co-producer Paul Lavoie, the mosaic is huge - 28 feet tall by 22 feet wide. It is on permanent display on an outside back wall of the Vic Juba Community Theatre at Lakeland College.

On May 24, 2005 during the Alberta/Saskatchewan Centennial Royal Visit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a portion of the Buffalo Twins mural was the centre piece that helped unveil the newly renamed: "The Royal Alberta Museum" in Edmonton, AB.
