The St. Joseph's Catholic Church was built in 1898. An earlier Catholic Church was built in 1863 on Church Street, at that time the church was within the Invercargill parish. In 1873 the Queenstown parish was established. At that time a dedicated presbytery was needed which was built in 1877. In 1882 the presbytery was converted to a convent to house the Dominican nuns which were brought to Queenstown to run the newly opened St. Joseph's School. In 1883 the church sold its property on church street and the activities of parish were centered around the school and the convent until the present church building was constructed in 1898.
The present building is in a was designed by Francis William Petre Gothic style. It is constructed of locally quarried schist. The stone which was sourced and transported by members of the parish. The parish also donated other items and labor for the church and was completed without debt.
The church continues as an active church. The parish also has other churches in Arrowtown and Garston.
