In the Boston and Newton community of Chestnut Hill is the main campus of Boston College, a Jasuit-run college that has a statue of St. Ignatius Loyola within the campus.

The statue is located about 80 ft to the south of Gasson Hall, an iconic landmark that has a great bell tower and clock; and 60 ft west of the entrance to Higgins Hall. See the Boston College Chestnut Hill Campus Map on the college web site for building locations. The statue is located in a small brick plaza off the walkway among an open common area.

The statue is about life-sized and on a pedestal about four feet high. The statue is made of bronze and is a full-figure depiction. The figure is standing, though the upper torso leans to the left. The head is looking downward to his left hand, but the eyes are closed. His right hand is pressed against his chest. His robes are flowing about him. There is a plaque in the brick by the base with the following text:

"Saint Ignatius Loyola
1491-1556
Founder - Society of Jesus
Gift of Sally Englhard Pingree, Boston College Trustee and the
Charles W. Englehard Foundation
Sculptor - Pablo Eduardo November 7, 2005"

St. Ignatius of Loyola was originally a knight who was severely injured in the Battle of Pamplona in 1521, then went through a spiritual conversion while recovering from his injuries. He was convinced to abandon his military life and fully follow God and followed the example of Francis of Assisi. He had visions of Mary and the infant Jesus at the shrine of Our Lady of Monserrat. In 1539, he and a few followers founded the Society of Jesus, which was approved by Pope Paul III. He was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1609, and canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622. He is the patron saint of soldiers and spiritual retreats. There is a feast for him, held on July 31.

Boston College is a Jesuit-run college (Jesuit = Society of Jesus). Thus, the statue honors the founder of the order that runs the college.
