Official description:
Tall shaft topped by an eagle with outspread wings, and decorated with reliefs of crossed rifles and flags.
Inscriptions:
1) Main: "Erected July 4th 1866, by the citizens of Venango Co. in memory of the brave heros of this county who died in defense of the union in the War of the Great Rebellion.
2) Listing: 420 names
3) BEGGS & LINDSEY./ALLEGHENY CITY on base
It is interesting to see how the local county viewed the US Civil War. To put the death toll in perspective, it was just under 2% of the population, which was growing rapidly due to the discovery of oil in the region.
I did not realize marble could wear so much, so I though the momument was made of limestone. In 1990, bronze plaques were installed to capture the fading inscriptions.
