Arthur Randolph Shields, a native of Cades Cove, was the author of "The Cades Cove Story". He is buried in the Cades Cove Methodist Church Cemetery.

Arthur Randolph Shields was the author of "The Cades Cove Story". Born in Cades Cove, he lived there until age 13. Shields graduated from Maryville College and received a M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. He was an elementary school teacher, a biologist, an associate professor of Biology at Emory and Henry College and Roanoke College, and a professor and chairman of the Department of Biology at Maryville College. He served six summers as a ranger-naturalist in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A photo of this Cades Cove Methodist Church and cemetery is on the cover of his book.
