The Great Northern Railway's mainline connecting Minneapolis and Seattle was completed in 1893 and this station at Newport was completed in 1910. At one time three different railroads serviced Newport and a second station, completed in 1908, for the Idaho & Washington Northern is situated right next door to this station.

The depot now houses offices for the Stimson Lumber Company.
