A Little History
The winter of 1851-1852 Carver saw its first settler, a Norwegian immigrant, Axel Jorgenson. He laid clam to about 415 acres, built a shanty, and during the next two years completed establishing his claim. Jorgenson referred to his claim as Luksenborg, but the name didn’t stick. In 1854 he sold his claim to The Carver Land Company
By 1855, Carver already had a tailor, a hotel, a boarding house, a building designer, a carpenter, a livery stable, a blacksmith, two shoemakers, and a general store. When the town was platted in 1857, it already had 35 buildings; the school district was established the same year and was known as Minnesota School District #1 for over a hundred years.
In 1877, Carver incorporated as a village, the first in Carver County and later became a city. The City, Township, and County were named after the 1700th century British explorer Jonathan Carver.
