St. James church was built from the materials taken from the previous parish church of St Margaret's Church, which was built on wet ground. So wet a move to higher ground was the only solution in 1865. (

In 1868 there was correspondence with John Taylor & Co., Bell Founders, Loughborough about recasting a new bell from the old one of 1711. Whether this is for these bells or the bells in St Margaret's Tower only a visit to Kendal Records Office will settle the question. The new church was built and in use by then. These letters continued until 1888.
