Gayville is a small town in Yankton County, east of Yankton, and was established in 1872 when the Dakota Southern Railroad completed its line from Sioux City to Yankton.

Elkanah Gay, a contractor with the railroad, bought a 100-acre town site from homesteader Halvor Brynelson for a dollar and name the town after himself.

It has a population of 407 as of the 2010 census, a 3% decrease in population from the census in 2000.

The area was settled by German, Norwegian, Irish, Danish, and Dutch immigrants and the tow was incorporated in 1892.

The town is home to Gayville Hall, a music hall that started in 2001 and features many types of music including: folk, country, pop, bluegrass, and jazz.
