Dr. Elijah Barton Pickel was a well-known doctor in Southern Oregon and statewide. He moved to Medford around 1890 after completing his medical degree work at the University of Kentucky. He initially partnered with E.P. Geary, one of Medford's first physicians and together they received acclaim for their innovative work in medicine. In 1900 Dr. Pickel purchased the first x-ray machine between Albany, Oregon and Yreka, California. In 1892 he was elected to the City Counsel and would become mayor in 1904-05. A land speculator, Pickel initially purchased large tracts of land in Medford, including the entire block on which this house eventually would be built.
The house was built for rental purposes and has seen many tenants through the years. Between 1900 and historic nomination in 1982, the house had more than a dozen different owners. It was one of four oldest houses still standing along West Main Street. A notable feature is the brick cold storage room attached to the main body of the house.
