After a hay crop had been cut with a sickle, a hay rake was pulled by horses and when a sufficient amount of hay had been collected by the rake, the tines were lifted by a hand operated lever, leaving the accumulation to be pitched by hand onto a wagon and hauled to the haystack or barn.
