The clock is on the end of an office block on St. Georges Street and stands in a niche in the wall. It was paid for by public subscription and erected by the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge.
The planets are not to scale and held on a series of metal rings. Because at least one planet is always behind the clock I was not able to count how many are represented so I don’t know whether Pluto is included or not.
On the basis that the planets are rotating round the clock face you might expect that the clock represents the sun, but in fact the sun is shown above and below it. The sun is portrayed as a circle with rays of sunlight facing towards the clock. The inner circle of each sun is actually formed from the Rotary Club symbol of a cog wheel.
The inscription above the clock says:
Millennium Clock 2000 AD.
The Funds for this clock were raised by public subscription and
presented to the town by the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge.
The inscription below the clock is a list of organisations that donated money for the clock.
