"Construída como parte integrante de uma das muralhas antigas da cidade - provavelmente a muralha romana embora possa ter sido edificada já em época altimedieval - esta torre quadrangular passou para a propriedade do Convento do Salvador do Mundo em 1590, ano em que o Município a cedeu. Pelos vestígios originais que chegaram até hoje parece que a torre possuía inicialmente três andares, sendo o último um balcão assente em cachorrada.
Ao longo dos tempos as obras sucederam-se no edifício, facto que dificulta a identificação de fases construtivas e de possíveis acrescentos. Um dos períodos fundamentais da sua história foi o século XIII, altura de que data o abobadamento do primeiro piso e a actual passagem principal, através de um arco quebrado. Inserido no conjunto conventual do Salvador do Mundo, as alterações parecem ter sido mínimas, salientando-se apenas a abertura de um janelão barroco ao nível do segundo registo e a transformação dos pisos superiores em janelas do prórpio convento.
No século XX, com vista à instalação da sua Delegação Regional de Edifícios e Monumentos do Sul, a DGEMN efectuou amplas obras de restauro e de reconversão. Entre os trabalhos então realizados, destaca-se a demolição de edifícios anexos ao convento, bem como a reconversão de todos os espaços interiores. Em 1995, instalou-se neste edifício o Laboratório de Análise de Materiais de Construção."

"Built as part of one of the ancient city walls - probably the Roman wall although it may have been built as early as age altimedieval - this square tower passed to the ownership of the Convent of the Saviour of the World in 1590, the year in which the city relented.
