Marker Name: Safeway Store
Marker Text: In the late 1930’s, Frank H. Paradice designed an Art Deco style concrete storefront for the Safeway Corporation. This reduced the cost of architectural design and enabled customers to recognize the store at a glance. The design was eventually used for hundreds of stores throughout the Pacific Northwest. In the 1950’s the Art Deco details on the storefront of this store were emphasized by neon tubes that ran across the parapet (a wall) and the metal awning.
Built: 1940
