Saddle Lake is a small, man made lake situated along the east side of Reservoir Road on the north western outskirts of Grand Forks, about one mile up the road from Highway 3.
Though it is no longer used as an irrigation source, it has created a new purpose for itself by providing wetland for many species of birds and animals.
Dammed by the Doukhobors around 1915, the water Saddle Lake held was used to irrigate their crops. It is now many years since irrigation water has been drawn from it, but in the intervening years it has created a locally unique ecosystem. In particular, it provides wetland around its perimeter for a species of relatively rare salamander. That salamander (as well as other species) is apparently now on the verge of local extinction because of the predation of an introduced species - the goldfish, of all things!
