Marker Name: Irvin Furniture Store
Marker Text: Chad Irvin’s Furniture Store was the first stone building in the downtown core. The stone, called tuff, is an unusual building material found only in Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Southern Idaho, and Northern California. The stone was mainly used for foundations and chimneys on residential buildings. Here Irvin sold furniture and eventually coffins, which led him to obtain a mortician’s license. Note the original transom style windows which served the dual purposes of adding light to the store and advertising space to attract customers. In the 1920’s the building became the first home to safeway.
Built: 1912
