The Pennsylvania Historical Commission placed a plaque here in 1930 to recognize Maj. Gen. Meade taking command of the Army of the Potomac, just days before the Battle of Gettysburg.

The historical marker is a plaque set into a large block of granite taken from the Gettysburg battlefield. It is located at the foot of the hill of Prospect Hall (Waymark WMFVZZ) in Frederick, MD.

Inscription on main front plaque:

under orders from
President Lincoln
seven hundred feet
north of this marker
June 28 1863
He pursued the Confederates
into Pennsylvania
and at Gettysburg July 1, 2, 3
fought the decisive battle
of the Civil War.

This boulder

near Devil's Den
on the battlefield
of Gettysburg.

Upon the resignation of General Hooker as commander of The Army of the Potomac, Meade was promoted by President Lincoln. The courier arrived at Frederick to inform Meade of the appointment. History reports that Major General Meade had a mixture of success and failure in his subsequent command.
