Tinker is doing a song with his army pal Linden Walker at the opening of Linden’s pub. Tinker and Eric go to a house in Clavering to buy an antique piano for the do and take it away in a trailer attached to Lovejoy’s Morris Minor. Unfortunately they are stopped by the police and the car is towed away for repairs, leaving Tinker and Eric by the roadside with the piano. Time passes by and the car isn’t returned so Tinker and Eric go for a drink. At they pub they realise the mechanic is using the car for his own purposes.

Meanwhile, Lovejoy is approached by ex prison warder, George Palmer. Palmer wants to do house clearances with Lovejoy. The pair go to a house and agree a price with a home owner and clear the contents. Lovejoy buys the furniture and sells it on to Linden. Unfortunately the lady of the house is a partner of Palmer’s, and the real house owner is on holiday. Further, the house owner goes to Linden’s opening party and recognises his furniture. A friendly detective gives Lovejoy a week to bring Palmer in.

Linden has an aunt with some silver. Linden is going to take her in, in exchange for the silver. The silver is Irish, but has had the hall marks taken off to avoid tax at some point in the past. Lovejoy pays a silver expert to put the marks back. At auction the silver is rejected by an expert, as the hall marks have the wrong date. Tinker, however, saves the day. Along with the piano he bought was a rare edition of a book, which sells for several thousand pounds, making up Lovejoy’s losses.

With a tip off from the police Lovejoy tracks Palmer down. He cons Palmer into robbing Lady Jane’s garden of statues. Lovejoy gives the police the nod and Palmer and his lady friend are arrested.
