The 1988 statue is called 'Meeting Place' but, like many
statues in Dublin it has a nickname. This one being 'The Hags With The
Bags'. The statue shows two ladies, cast in bronze, sitting on a bench
having a chat. Their bags are on the ground by their feet. See the photo of them
being joined by Mrs MM, definitely not brass, but who likes to have a chat and
pick-up on the local gossip and scandal.
The Away City website [visit link] has a
page about this sculpture that reads (some of the grammar and English is
incorrect):
"Name: Meeting Place
Nickname: The hags with the
bags[1]
Where: Lower Liffey Street
Coordinates:
53.3468;-6.2634
Inauguration date: 1988
Sculptor: Jakki
McKenna
Story: Two women with bags sitting on a bank and
discussing. On one of the bags is written "Arnotts". What is remarkable here are
the shoes of the Lady on the right. No high heels!
The "Metting Place" is one of those charmin Dublin
statues that reflect everyday life in the town. Situated close to the huge
shopping centres on Henry Street and Jervis Street, one might see himself in
those two woman passing by. On the other hand, on hectic Saturday shopping
tours, who can afford a peaceful chat like those two ladies
have?
Notes:
[1] hag meaning old
lady/witch"
